Cast iron pans are one of the cheapest, most easily available dishes to cook in. They are cheap i.e can be found for as low as $20 for a 12” skillet. They also last for an unbelievably long time & easy to clean and maintain.
It can be used in a wide variety of cooking methods, can be used over a campfire or in the oven. With proper seasoning, it can also be used in place of a non-stick teflon. The seasoning can be done at home unlike the teflon which is useless once the coating comes off.
Searing on a cast iron is unparalleled to anything else , requires minimal care & no special utensils.
It does take a little getting used to to get the temperature right to prevent sticking but once you get the hang of it, it works amazing.
Also, the pan looks really cool served with the food, so the aesthetics are an added bonus.
CAUTION:
Please be careful if you have a glass field oven as it could get scratched .
Also, if you cook foods with high acidity, make sure to re-season it to make it non-sticky. This can be done by coating the entire skillet with canola or peanut oil & place in a 400F oven for about 2 hours and it’s good to go.
